Digital Pedagogy and Technology

Exploring innovative approaches to teaching and learning in digital environments

Project Overview

This comprehensive body of work examines the intersection of digital technology and pedagogy with a critical lens, focusing on equity, accessibility, and meaningful integration in educational settings. Drawing from over a decade of experience in faculty development and educational technology, this project challenges conventional approaches to EdTech and advocates for human-centered, sustainable practices.

The work spans multiple dimensions: from theoretical frameworks around minimal computing and digital equity to practical applications in faculty development and online learning design. Central to this project is the belief that technology should serve pedagogical goals and human needs, not drive them.

Key Focus Areas

  • Critical Digital Pedagogy: Examining power structures in educational technology and promoting approaches that center student agency and critical thinking
  • Minimal Computing in Education: Advocating for sustainable, accessible approaches to educational technology that prioritize equity over flashy features
  • Affective Labor in EdTech: Investigating the emotional and care work that sustains educational communities, particularly in digital environments
  • Digital Equity & Access: Addressing digital divides and promoting inclusive technology practices that serve all learners
  • Faculty Development: Supporting educators in developing digital literacies that enhance rather than overwhelm teaching practice
  • Online Learning Excellence: Developing research-based practices for effective remote and hybrid learning environments

Research & Publications

Digital Humanities & Computational Text Analysis

My work extends into digital humanities through collaborative projects that make computational methods accessible and engaging for broader audiences:

The Data-Sitters Club

Co-creator and contributor to The Data-Sitters Club, an innovative digital humanities project that uses computational text analysis to explore the Baby-Sitters Club book series. This project demonstrates how digital methods can be applied to popular culture texts while making complex technical concepts accessible through familiar narrative frameworks.

The project features over 20 "books" that guide readers through various digital humanities methodologies including text mining, topic modeling, network analysis, and multilingual computational approaches. Each "book" combines rigorous methodology with engaging storytelling, making digital humanities tools approachable for students and educators.

Online Teaching & Learning Design

Drawing from extensive experience in online education, I advocate for thoughtful, equity-centered approaches to digital learning environments:

  • Accessibility-First Design: Developing online courses that prioritize universal design principles and accommodate diverse learning needs
  • Asynchronous Learning Excellence: Creating engaging asynchronous experiences that foster meaningful interaction and deep learning
  • Community Building in Digital Spaces: Designing strategies for cultivating authentic connections and collaborative learning online
  • Canvas LMS Optimization: Leveraging learning management systems to enhance rather than complicate the learning experience
  • Digital Equity in Course Design: Ensuring online courses are accessible to students with varying technological resources and digital literacies

Current Work at Georgetown University

As Assistant Director for Digital Learning at the Center for New Designs for Learning and Scholarship (CNDLS), I lead initiatives that:

  • Develop faculty expertise in digital pedagogical practices
  • Design and deliver workshops on educational technology integration
  • Research and implement accessibility-first approaches to online learning
  • Advocate for equity-centered technology policies and practices
